Bevel gears: advantages and disadvantages of using them

aprile 26, 2023
Today we talk about hobbing and specifically about bevel gears. These are very important elements for the correct functioning of transmission parts. Like any component, it can present various problems that can compromise their functioning.

How do bevel gears work?

Bevel gears consist of two gears with cone-shaped teeth that mesh with each other to transmit motion. There are two types of bevel gears, helical and spiral. The two shapes allow for a uniform movement, without slipping and ensuring high efficiency. This is undoubtedly one of the main advantages of this hobbing. However, there are really many problems to deal with with this type of teeth. Therefore, it must be chosen for applications that specifically require it and treated with the necessary machines.

Problems caused by bevel gears

First of all we find the problem of wear and tear of the teeth. Being a gear that works in contact with abrasive particles and that requires high quality lubricant, it is very easy to break before time. Other causes include excessive load and a non-optimal design of the teeth for the function to be performed. This can increase the play between the sprockets compromising the accuracy of movement.

Noise is also a common problem with bevel gears. There are many factors at play here. Certainly by carrying out expensive and frequent checks it is easier to avoid this type of problem.

In GSI we have decided to make the helical bevel toothing for worm screws, while we entrust the straight conical toothing or with spiral teeth to collaborating companies.
