Shot peening: the solution to wear problems in gears

aprile 19, 2023
Today we would like to talk about a new topic linked to a very important finishing process such as shot peening. This technology helps improve the strength and life of the gears. Thanks to the residual compression generated on the surfaces of the objects, the shot peening process increases their resistance to fatigue, wear and corrosion. Overall, this process can reduce long-term maintenance and replacement costs, while improving life and reliability of items that have undergone this treatment.

Shot peening and resistance

Taking into consideration instead the additional resistance that a gear can acquire through the shot peening process, it depends on several factors. First of all the type of material, the geometry and the specifics of the process used. Generally speaking, gears that have undergone this process can improve their fatigue and fracture toughness by 30% to 50% over gears that have not undergone it.

It is important to keep in mind that you cannot completely eliminate the risk of gear failure, it can only reduce the likelihood of it. There are several parameters that need to be monitored and controlled to ensure the effect of the process. Typically the size and shape of the pellets, air pressure, process time and peening distance are involved. Additionally, there are several analysis techniques that can be used to measure the effects of the shot peening process on the surface of gears and other mechanical components.

International shot peening standards

The shot peening process is internationally regulated, with various technical specifications and standards defining the requirements for the peening process. Among the main international standards are ISO 26910-1 and SAE AMS2430/1D:2017, the latter used above all in the United States.

In GSI, we use the shot peening process to improve the quality of our products. Specifically, we subject the gear teeth to this process, noting a significant improvement in their mechanical properties. Thanks to the analysis techniques available, we have measured and verified the effects of the shot peening process on our products, thus guaranteeing their quality and reliability.

We believe the shot peening process is an important surface finishing technology that can significantly improve the life and reliability of mechanical objects. Using precise control techniques and specific regulations, it is possible for us to guarantee the quality and safety of our products, offering reliable and high quality technical solutions.
