In the mechanical transmission industry, we often talk about hardness, microstructure, concentricity, and noise. But there’s another phrase that comes up more and more — especially in critical projects: “We need certificate 3.1 or 3.2.”

It sounds like a formality. But the difference between a 3.1 and a certificate 3.2 changes how an entire company needs to operate. It’s not just a piece of paper — it’s a different level of responsibility, planning, and process control. And in high-stakes applications, that difference can be decisive.

What is certificate 3.2 really about?

The reference standard here is EN 10204, which defines what kind of documentation must accompany metallic materials, and who is responsible for guaranteeing the validity of the data. With certificate 3.1, the manufacturer tests and certifies the material. With certificate 3.2, an independent third party or customer inspector supervises, verifies, and confirms the results.

This means that sampling must be traceable, tests may be repeated under supervision, and the inspector can approve or reject the batch. That’s why many industries — such as rail, oil & gas, and marine — make it mandatory.

It’s not a declaration. It’s a verification process.

Certificate 3.2: what it really changes in your company

Requesting a certificate 3.2 means shifting from a documentation task to a full operational process.

With 3.1, you:
  • order the material
  • receive the producer’s certificate
  • archive it
With 3.2, you:
  • plan and coordinate inspections in advance
  • manage casting batches and sampling protocols
  • collect and validate documentation for audits
  • respond to NCRs and technical clarifications
  • align purchasing, quality, and production
It’s not just about extra paperwork. It’s about ensuring traceability and accountability from start to finish.

That’s why, when a buyer casually says, “This order needs a 3.2,” many suppliers sigh. Because they know it’s not just another checkbox — it’s an entirely different working model.

Why certificate 3.2 matters in gear manufacturing

Gears are highly sensitive to metallurgical consistency. A small deviation in microstructure, inclusions, surface decarb, or hardness can lead to noise, wear, or early failure.

With certificate 3.2, inspections go deeper. You reduce the risk of incorrect batches. You protect the integrity of your product and the systems it powers.

That’s why this requirement is non-negotiable in sectors where safety and long-term reliability come first.

A number that defines industrial culture

3.1 means: the producer guarantees. 3.2 means: someone else confirms the producer is able to guarantee. It may seem like semantics — but it reflects a mindset. Responsibility. Quality. Accountability. A certificate 3.1 is issued by a factory. A certificate 3.2 is built by a system.
