Education and the world of work: when resources and companies are incompatible
novembre 16, 2021
In the past months, work has grown exponentially, we have had several employees who have retired or moved. Finding the perfect person especially in production is not easy. From before the summer, we started looking for a specialized resource to be included as head of the turning department. After doing dozens of interviews, we found the right person for us. Were we just lucky? Maybe a little but, above all, we have changed our channels for research.
Why is it so difficult to find skilled manpower?
In our opinion, it all starts with education, which is also essential for working in production. Today, to lead a company to development and growth it is necessary to invest a lot in the resources to be included in production. This leads to having to choose among the candidates or to go and look for skilled workers from competitors. The problem lies in the fact that often the school does not have the right tools, as in the past, to teach the work on a practical level. Training a junior resource in production means having the possibility of supporting a senior as a teacher. Perhaps only possible in larger companies, in SMEs it is complex to choose not to use the hired resources to the maximum.
How did we find the right person?
Do not get me wrong, I have nothing against junior resources; in fact, we have just hired one for the turnery. However, we drew on a region-funded training course to find it. The solution is really optimal, because the course gives a good theoretical and practical basis necessary for our work. Often we talk about fault: of young people who do not want to work in the manufacturing field and of companies that have excessive demands. On the one hand, teenagers leave school without practical and theoretical skills up to date and therefore cannot be employed immediately on a productive level. On the other hand, companies do not deprive themselves of a resource with long experience to support and train young people. For this, the funded training course seemed to us a really good idea. Here, the workers who were introduced to us had already worked alongside machine tools for months, they had had notions of mechanical drawing, so integrate them and making them autonomous and productive immediately is much easier.
For the company it is an investment, but it would still be to train a resource at one's own expense, despite this we have found in this course the turning point towards professional growth within G.S.I. Today, hiring highly specialized and performing resources is necessary to keep up with the times and still be competitive.
