Find out how to reduce the roughness on the profile of the gears and save the lot you owe by now for lost!

dicembre 15, 2021
Often we have to work on unpublished projects and sometimes it can happen that we are faced with problems that are difficult to solve as in this case. It recently happened to us that a gear for the ventilation of road tunnels raised doubts about the roughness of its profile. As you can imagine, such a piece rotates at very high speed and having a defect like the one described above could generate noise, but not only break the gears.

How the isotropic finishing process can save a batch

Also this week we are talking about surface finishes, as I told you this process can be seen as a waste of money and time, but it is not always the case. In G.S.I. we believe that if they are indispensable it is good to use them. Well, let's go back to the specific case, the profile of our gears that has roughnesses that can cause vibrations, noise and breakage. With a simple isotropic finishing process you can avoid all of this.

The isotropic finishing process reduces friction and minimizes the mechanical problems of meshing between two pieces with only the improvement of their surface. The process takes place at low temperatures and is a chemical-physical treatment carried out at room temperature (therefore lower than the common treatments) in a water-based liquid.

More advantages than disadvantages

A smoother surface allows for greater longevity of the kinematics because the rubbing between the surfaces of the gears that rotate together is much smoother and free of irregularities. As you can imagine, this allows the end customer to have less problems and maintenance. Furthermore, being a process conducted at room temperature, it is also possible to save energy costs and consequently also respect the environment.

Were you familiar with this type of surface finish?
