FMEA: the control tool for our projects

ottobre 26, 2022
FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) is a fundamental tool in the engineering field, which allows you to analyze and prevent possible problems that could arise in a project. In a previous article we mentioned the importance of this tool, but now let's go deeper into the subject to better understand the problems that we can solve using FMEA in a suitable way.

Prevention is the key to ensuring that a project runs smoothly and correctly. When working on making complex gears for agricultural machinery or automobiles, collaboration with the assembler is essential. Identifying defects early allows us to avoid errors in production and save time and money. For this reason, the technical study phase represents most of the time and work required to start a new project. This phase is always followed by prototyping to have the pieces to actually check and correct any problems before going into series production.

How does the FMEA support us in this?

In this context, FMEA plays a fundamental role, as it allows us to carry out preventive control work by classifying errors and assessing their severity and probability of occurrence. In this way, we can immediately correct the problems and draw up the IPR (Risk Priority Index), which represents the product of the Probability, Severity and Detectability counts, indispensable for each cause of failure.

Once the problems have been identified, we can move on to the corrective phase to eliminate the cause of the defect, reduce the risk of its recurrence and implement all possible controls to identify it in time. FMEA allows us to have a 360-degree view of the project and to prevent possible problems that could arise, improving the quality of the final product and reducing production costs.

In conclusion, FMEA is an extremely useful and important tool in the engineering field, which allows you to anticipate problems that could arise in a project. Thanks to this tool, it is possible to carry out a preventive check, classifying the errors and evaluating their seriousness and the probability of occurring. In this way, problems can be corrected early, improve the quality of the final product and reduce production costs.
