Gage R&R and process capability

Measurement is an essential theme for the work of building custom gears. In particular, we want to tell you about a recent experience we have had, which has led us to reflect on the importance of adopting objective measurement tools to ensure maximum precision and accuracy.

As always, when we receive the goods, we go through a verification and preparation procedure to ensure that everything complies with the specifications requested by the customer. However, in this case, we received a non-compliance notification a few days later, despite having carried out all the necessary checks.

We started checking the goods, comparing ourselves with the customer, and we discovered that we were both right: we had simply measured differently. This experience made us understand that it was necessary to adopt an objective measurement tool, in order to avoid errors due to subjective measurements or different interpretations.

The Gage R&R method

We have chosen to use the Gage R&R method, a statistical method that allows us to evaluate the repeatability and reproducibility of measuring instruments, so that we can determine with certainty how far we deviate from the expected value and act accordingly.

In practice, the Gage R&R method involves identifying a characteristic to measure and calibrating the necessary control instrument in the metrological room, carrying out some measurements to determine the "nominal" measurement. Subsequently, the operators to whom the test is to be subjected are identified and a certain number of measurements are carried out, using the average obtained to compare the measurement value with the nominal value.

In this way, we can guarantee a correct measurement system for precision and accuracy, which allows us to verify the process capability and to understand how standardized the production process is. In addition, the Gage R&R method allows us to identify any errors or problems in the measurement system and act accordingly to correct them.

In conclusion, the experience we have had has made us understand the importance of adopting objective measurement tools to guarantee the highest quality products and maximum customer satisfaction. The Gage R&R method has proven to be a valuable ally in our daily work, allowing us to continuously improve our processes and guarantee maximum precision and accuracy in measurements.
