GEAR PROPELLER CROWNING: How to deal with gear noise in 2023

We start the new year with the intention of giving you more and more interesting and useful information to better understand the technical complexity behind the gears. Today we are talking about crowning on the gear propeller, a geometric modification of vital importance for the functioning of the mechanism.

Why does noise occur in the gears?


Certainly, compared to other problems, that of noise induced by errors on the propeller is more difficult to present. Despite this, it is important to address the issue because often even the drawing, which apparently does not present problems, can hide this type of error.

Geometric imperfections are often not taken into account when a design is made. The limits are given by the absence of load, but also by the fact that either a master gear is used which couples with the gear to be controlled or a counter wheel is used. The profile error certainly affects the noise a lot, but it is not the only cause. In fact, the pressure under load is also decisive.

How crowning is obtained


The crowning is the result of the movement of the tool which imprints a targeted material removal that generates this geometric modification. We obtain it through CNC numerical control hobbing machines, through a shaving finish or through the tooth grinding operation.

When to apply crowning


It is one of the most used strategies for noise reduction as we have already extensively analyzed previously. It is generally used in applications with high number of revolutions. The value must be determined in relation to the module and the application from a few microns up to even a few cents. As the value varies, it is necessary to decrease the contact surface of the gear which in any case carries out its transmission work, with less contact and therefore reducing noise.
