Geometric profile control in gear manufacturing

gennaio 16, 2024
With today's article we want to talk to you about the control of the geometric profile in the technical specifications of industrial products.

Profile checking is a practice widely adopted in technical documentation, essential to ensure that the surfaces of our components comply with specified requirements.

OZ symbol and UF and UZ modifiers

The revolutionary OZ symbol according to the ISO 1101 standard of 2017 allows you to indicate an offset tolerance zone, simplifying the control of the shape error without the need for boxed dimensions of the theoretical profile.

Boxed dimensions continue to be used for dimensional and shape control of grooves, but UF and UZ modifiers provide options to maintain the same deviations from the previous dimensional tolerance and create unique composite profiles.

Advanced control with datum features and composite boxes

In the profile tolerance panel, we will introduce the importance of adding datum feature markers such as A, B, and C. These allow control of perpendicularity and position relative to specific reference points, thus simultaneously broadening control over size, orientation, position and shape.

For more complex controls it is desirable to use the composite box according to the ASME Y14.5 standard, allowing the specification of different values for shape, position and orientation.

Differences between ISO and ASME standards

A key point of comparison is the difference between ISO and ASME standards for indicating a non-symmetrical tolerance. While ISO uses the UZ modifier, ASME introduced the Ⓤ modifier. The latter indicates a tolerance that is not symmetrical to the theoretical profile, with the number following Ⓤ representing the amount of tolerance in the desired direction. According to ASME the value after Ⓤ zero indicates an internal error, therefore negative values cannot be used and the value cannot exceed the profile tolerance.

If you are a technician looking for precise and tailor-made solutions for your industrial gears, we are here to offer personalized technical advice and guarantee the highest quality in your projects.
