Increase in the prices of heat treatments? What to do?

ottobre 27, 2021
A very important issue for those who work in mechanics and in the construction of components to be assembled is certainly that of heat treatment.
If recently steel prices seem to have stabilized, it is the heat treatment that has risen. In this article we want to highlight the economic and mechanical advantages of induction hardening heat treatment.

Advantages of induction hardening heat treatment

Often the induction hardening heat treatment is among the most widely used and best known. This is no coincidence, because one of the main advantages of induction hardening is how hardness is distributed throughout the piece. Without considering that the sudden drop in temperature reduces the problem of metal deformation. In addition, the heating times are very short, so the process becomes extremely effective on components such as shafts and gears that need controlled heating. These working in rather harsh environments must be resistant and last over time without their mechanical characteristics being altered.

Productivity and well-being for the environment

Induction hardening is a very ductile treatment, because it can also be applied on pieces with very different geometries. This increases the possibilities of massive application by reducing production costs.

In addition to all these mechanical advantages, induction hardening also allows you to save electricity, reducing costs. In fact, it is not necessary to heat the whole component, but only the desired area. The choice of this treatment also has environmental advantages, because an emulsion of polymers is used and not the oil bath.

Energy price increase: what is it happening?

If on the one hand the price of raw materials is stabilizing, on the other hand that of natural gas has undergone a strong increase. With global economic growth, ecological transition and rising energy demand, producers and transport are in trouble. In essence, European demand is too high and too fast for what the supplier states can sustain. To this, we must also add the increase in CO2 emissions given by the new European policies for the energy transition. This increase causes coal consumers to shift to natural gas which has in fact become the main raw material now burned to produce electricity.

Basically, choosing a treatment that allows us to have less impact on the environment as well as economic has really many advantages at the final price to the customer.
