Satellite for medium-large power reducers: how it works and how it is built
marzo 01, 2023
Today's article is inspired by a piece we are dealing with these days and I take this opportunity to talk about its features and how it is built to ensure efficient and silent operation. We are entering the world of satellites (or planet gears), i.e. fundamental components of medium-large power reducers. Their function is to reduce the rotational speed of the gearbox output shaft.
Construction and qualitative characteristics of the satellite
The satellite is made of case-hardened 20MnCr5 steel, a resistant material that guarantees a long life of the component. The modulus is 6.5, which means that each tooth has a width of 6.5 times the pitch. It has 22 teeth and a pressure angle of 20 degrees.
The hole is ground to ensure perfect adherence to the central axis of the gearbox. While, the teeth are ground to guarantee the same adherence to the internal ring gear and to the external pinion.
The satellite has the required quality class Din 3962 6, which guarantees high precision in its construction. In addition, the planetary gear has a crowning (gear crowning) on the helix of the tooth and a tapering of the head on the involute (gear tip relief), which help to reduce the operating noise of the gearbox.
Satellite applications
The satellite is used in many types of medium-large power reducers, such as those used in machinery for industry, construction, agriculture, and many other applications. The satellite allows the rotational speed of the gearbox output shaft to be reduced, allowing for higher torque at low speed.
Additionally, the planetary gear is used in conjunction with other gearbox components, such as the inner ring gear and outer pinion, to achieve the desired gear ratio.
