Worm gear crown: all its particularities and how to control it

The worm gear is a very particular gear to be treated, in fact, not being regulated by law, each manufacturer has its own control specifications. You will understand well that therefore we are dealing with an extremely niche kinematics. The application on the homonymous gearbox allows to have a very high reduction ratio with good yields and with an irreversible motion.

How to check worm gears

As we said above, the same control with an involute spline cannot be applied to worm gears. In fact, they have a special machine that controls parameters such as Fr or runout, play, center line and contact distribution. To control these gears, unlike others, a high level of experience and know-how is still required. Although the machine we use in our testing has the visualization of the axes on a millesimal optical line, part of the control is delegated to the use of Prussian blue. This allows you to check the distribution of contact between screw and crown.

The control of worm gear crowns requires knowing how to combine a manual skill of yesteryear with the most modern technology.
